Not the state — the disagreement. Dimensionless, so a weld and an incision become commensurable. Miss the third field and it is not data, it is an uncontrolled experiment.

The lattice is what the solver predicts. The marks are what the instrument returned. Every violet hairline is the distance between the two — and where that distance exceeds the envelope, the lattice stops being drawn.
